About ETIPS

Within an online learning environment, ETIPS cases offer complete sets of multimedia materials, incorporating a suite of innovative, automated assessment tools. The cases appear to students as virtual school web sites, each accompanied by a case introduction and key challenges, supporting handouts, and a rubric and response page for submitting and receiving feedback on assigned short essays. Instructors are also given a number of convenient assessment and class management tools to track student learning individually and as a group.

The system we built

We began with by combining several pre-existing tools into a coherent case-based learning environment, with quantitative feedback on student performance. Because we quickly ran into the limitations of these tools, we worked with the client to build a comprehensive replacement to serve as a platform for research done with the ETIPS platform.

The current ETIPS software gives faculty a tool for building assignments out of pre-configured cases, using a simple shopping-cart metaphor. Students access these assignments using a token, providing Just-In-Time registration that reduces data entry for faculty. Progress through the case is highly scaffolded with a PlanMap, and students receive real-time formative feedback from automated essay grading.

"I described the team of people we were in introducing the project background, but all of you weren't able to share in the kudos and admiration I received this morning. Of course, it was our collective efforts that made this possible. I want to take this opportunity, again, to thank you for your valuable contributions to what ETIPS is today."
